Handling the fallout from 'You're Fired'

In my last post, I talked about the point at which you've had enough, someone's gone too far, and you have to fire them from the wedding plans. It's the smart and self-protective thing to do, and even if you're shaking from the adrenaline of the conversation, you'll soon be feeling much, much better.

But there is an issue that's going to rise up. The fallout. Everyone is going to have something to say.

A parent might get very angry, saying, "How could you do that to your sister?! What will people think if she's not in the bridal party?!" Gossip surges and everyone's yapping about The Big News.

Or at least that's what you think is going on. The truth is that people might mention it to other people, they might say, 'Wow, that's harsh' and then they're right back to focusing on their own lives. It's not as big a deal to other people as you, or your parents, might think. And if everyone knows your sister or your parent or your friend is a major pain in the butt, they might be thinking, "Wow, that's awesome!" They'll wish they had your strength.

So the wisdom here is to not let the wave of fallout wipe you out. Don't worry about what people might be saying, because that only enters your world if you let it. And if anyone calls you to questions you about it, or yell at you about it, your response need only be, "Yeah, well, I spent a lot of time thinking about that decision, and due to multiple incidents, I had no choice. This is the best thing for us and for the wedding." Don't go into detail, no matter how tempting it may be to share the gory stories and search for validation or sympathy. That's the biggest mistake you can make. Don't gossip about yourself! Just be vague, and stand your ground. If it got to this point, you did the right thing.
